Movie Review: Mama Mia - Here We Go Again
Rating: 6/10
Ug I have a love-hate relationship with this movie. Mama Mia is my all time FAVORITE movie, so I was actually really disappointed that I didn’t enjoy the second one as much. As the sequel to Mama Mia, I give it a 6. But as a movie on its own, I can honestly give it a 9. There were so many things for me that did not link up with the first one and that’s what killed it for me. Keep reading for more details of what I thought and be prepared for some spoilers hehe.
Hmmm, so lets take a second to discuss Harry Headbanger and his character. In the first movie he was made to look like a total “rebel” with some sexy guyliner, that is, in his past. For the second movie, they turned his character into a flamboyant virgin who was desperate for a one night stand with Donna. Idk, honestly it seemed more like a clarification that he was gay rather than him actually falling in love with her.
The writers kind of made all three encounters with the men super minimal, when clearly if these men went all the way to Greece for Sophie’s wedding, there had to be more to the story. Even the encounter with Sam was less than what I expected it to be. He helped her save a horse and then they hung out and (dot dot dot)... These were all super short, irrelevant relationships booo.
NOW, the cast was amazing! Lets take a second to appreciate Lilly James. She owned her role and honestly I was more interested in looking at her perfect body than the plot lol. Maybe one day I’ll look like that (I say as I take a sip of a cherry coke). She’s an icon woo. All of the original cast was phenomenal, but Cher was useless. She didn’t add anything to the story but she didn’t ruin it either. Meryl Streep obviously stole the show, for the whole 3 minutes she was in the film. But lets get real here, we all know she probably made more than the whole cast from her 3 minute debut.
Overall, I was disappointed at this movie being the sequel to Mama Mia. But if I am solely looking at this movie by itself, I enjoyed it. Lilly James really held her own and was enjoyable to watch, but I am still butthurt in regards to the relationships with the men.
